Carnival Freedom

Carnival Freedom ShipCarnival Cruise Lines' new 110,000-ton Carnival Freedom features a decor that celebrates design elements from throughout the centuries. The decor is trademark Carnival - always entertaining and amusing - but not tacky or over the top.

Carnival Freedom is the latest in the line's popular Conquest class of ships. The $500 million ship accommodates 2,974 passengers on a double-occupancy basis and 3,700 when all upper and lower berths are filled.

Carnival Freedom Accommodations

Carnival staterooms are not especially fancy but are roomy with all the conveniences. Most staterooms offer a bathroom with shower, basin and toilet, along with a telephone, TV showing first-run films and hair dryers. They also have a wonderful amenities basket.

The 577 inside cabins measure 165 square feet. The 337 ocean-view staterooms with a window or porthole measure a spacious 220 square feet, while the staterooms with floor-to-ceiling windows on Deck 11 forward are slightly larger at 240 square feet. There are 495 balcony cabins that are 220 square feet with a 54 square foot balcony. The eight demi-suites are 298 square feet, the 42 suites are 380 square feet and the 10 penthouses are 1,000 square feet with a 318 square foot balcony.

Public Areas: The center of the ship, the multi-deck Millennium Atrium, features a futuristic design with touches of polished copper, blue glass and stainless steel. Of course, as befits any Carnival ship, there are colored lights, which are sometimes a uniform color and other times slowly changing rainbow hues.

The Habana Cigar Bar is reminiscent of pre-Castro Cuba with barstools resembling cigars, artwork featuring images from old cigar boxes, a dance floor and backlit louvered doors that mimic a Havana sunset. Studio 70 calls to mind the disco era with a black interior, mirrored balls and pulsating lights. Bar Nouveau is a wine bar on the Promenade and is decorated in the art nouveau style with marble and tile accents. The Monticello Library is a salute to Thomas Jefferson with a copy of the Declaration of Independence. The Player's Sport Bar features sports memorabilia as well as big plasma-screen TVs. Other lounges are the 1910s-inspired Scott's Piano Bar, named after Scott Joplin; the Swingtime Jazz Club, harkening to the 1930s; and the Dynasty Room, an homage to ancient China.

Carnival Freedom Dining Options

Carnival's food has consitently gotten better over the years, and its supper clubs are superb. The two main dining rooms - Chic and Posh - feature a "sophisticated high desin" reminiscent of the 1990s. The decor features marble and a wood veneer laminated in python-skin pattern. Tables are separated by panels of marble and gold grillwork.

The Sun King Supper Club, named after Louis XIV, features a gold-leaf statue of the king, tapestries, antique mirros and a mural depicting the king's court. This reservations-only club, which charges a service fee, serves dry-aged USDA beef and all the traditional accompaniments.

Casual dining is available at the two-level Freedom restaurant, which features a 24 hour pizzeria, a pasta station, salad bar, deli, grill and upstairs, delicious fish and chips along with other seafood items.

Carnival Freedom Itineraries

The Carnival Freedom will continue operating 12-day cruises from Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, through late October. The ship alternates its "Grand Mediterranean" itinerary with a "Mediterranean & Greek Isles" route. The ship returns to Miami on Nov. 2008 for a series of seven-day alternating Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises in the winter.
